felix, you're right . . my mother and I are the same in many ways but she rarely gets me upset like this. It's been years since she's been able to throw me off balance with her bullshit. She called me last night to apologize so everything is fine now. We're friends again.

Well at least we now know that your crazy is genetic.
Only seeing my parents/siblings a couple times a year has strengthened our relationship substantially...when I went home for the holidays on the last night we all tee'd of on each other a bit.
my guess is that often peoples biggest faults they got from their folks, and subsequently on some level have pent up aggression to a behaviour pattern that they deem an issue for themselves that they wouldn't have otherwise.

I am my Dad. Literally. The only things I don't have (yet) are a huge belly, a patch of bald at the back of my head. Both of which are on their way.
My Dad yells a lot though. I don't think I yell as much. I don't think I would ever call my kids stupid either. But I have no issues.....

well it's like everything else. If you like a song, but you listen to it every day, eventually you'll get sick of it, but then if you don't listen to it for awhile, you remember why you initially liked it.
