Because analog gear adds a warmth? well you gotta ask yourself what exactly is this piece of gear adding to it? It's adding a bias. Is that bias going to be perfect for every situation? Nope. It's one of those things, if you don't know what/why you're doing it, then WHY are you doing it? Because someone told you analog gear sounds better? Some does, lots sound like shit.

Do you love the sound of this board? Because youre gonna be adding its sound to everything you do from here on out. (unless you just use it as a controller, not sure what board youre talking about)

Waves is the go to shit in pretty much every studio in the world right now. I'm not bashing gear by any means, but do I think you can achieve the same results if not cleaner "in the box" these days? Hell ya.

If you're at the point that you're just learning and getting your sound and technique up to snuff, I'd say you're probably hoping for it to sound cleaner. I don't think adding the bias of a piece of gear is going to help you out. That being said some people are gear heads and know that shit backwards and forwards.

Use cracked software until you're making money. When you start pulling in cash shell out. Save up though that Waves shit is expensive. I just picked up the LinearPhase PEQ Red for my mastering chain wasn't cheap at all, but hopefully will pay off once my business is going.

    My $0.02
thanks. this post will put some weight on the other side of my decision for sure. still going to rent this A&H board though...(wont jump into buying anything, but you know with software you have no goddamn choice. no returns.) .lemme find the name and a pic of this mixer....

    there.

and something i didnt realize until i looked it up is that it has a firewire component. huzzah?

All things said, I wouldn't kick that mixer out of my bed. How much is it going to run you?
Are you going to be doing recording or just mixing?

Like I said with software try before you buy.

no clue how much it would run me. a quick search of L&M would solve that....i am going to guess in the same ballpark as Waves bundle. I will be recording (and hopefully gigging) with whatever mixer i end up with...i just would really not get a shit behringer because they're like 150 bucks. lol.

Well if you're planning on recording and gigging with it you've got much different needs then the average person in here. Buying a good board makes sense. I thought perhaps you were just gonna make beats and wanted a board. I stand behind my earlier points though, for the rest of you *looks around with shifty eyes*.

sometimes i look back at posts like this and say, "I have no idea why i thought that made sense at the time" bottom line: I don't want to go cheap and regret it later.

Like chili said, doing things analogue isnt necessarily going to make everything better by default. Plenty of analogue gear sounds like balls, and each piece will have a characteristic tone to it. Plent of big budget mixes are all ITB these days, but for a good balance find a quality analogue EQ to use while mixing for broadband stuff and a good summing amp, dont really need a full board

Behringer has a couple pieces of gear that are good.

I just hooked up a 2 chan 32 band eq which has been collecting dust in my apt for 7 years to my set-up. Im guessing I'll be using it for mastering. Everything else I use is software based. Any other suggestions? My other option would be to make my colourful monitors a little less colourful.

i looked at the focusrite mixmaster for mastering, but i think they discontinued it which sucks because it was affordable. i am always afraid of buying used. I looked at the manley massive passive, but it is way more than i want to spend on an eq alone.

depending on the quality of your 32 band eq, it may not be able to louden up your mixes; it may just raise the noise floor. just out of curiosity, is it the dbx eq? cuz i thought about getting that one many moons ago.
