i just found an old cd of a mix i made in '03 that i really liked, but the levels on the recording are too high.
bass levels are coming out distorted but other than that everything is fine.
is there any way to clean this up? or am i screwed and have to try and pull the same mix over again?
help

i think for the most part, if it's recorded distorted it's probably not possible to make it any better. re-recording the mix can only make it better though.. put some extra planning into it. :)

Yeah it's possible that it's your speakers that are distorting and that the source material is actually okay. I've got a very old track that is like this. If it's distorted, then the old saying "you can't polish a turd" comes into effect - distortion is destructive, so you can't re-create the original waveform. If it's clean, however, then just re-eq your source file, or apply some multi-band compression with a band covering the offending frequencies and leave the rest pretty dry.
