what determines my peaks and my valleys when recording?

i noticed if i use line out on the mixer the peaks and valleys are really tight and the recording sounds like shit... i always have to use booth. with booth the peaks and valleys are more spread out but it still doesnt sound that great...bass is kind of distorted abit

sound card problem maybe? its a creative audigy 2 zs

would getting a m-audio soundcard be better for recording shit?

if i have my peak meter on then it gives an echo (hollow) effect on my recordings .. I have an M audio as well. Been tryin to figure this one out for a while.

i used to use soundforge for recording. now i use strictly reaper.

you should always use booth to record mixes, as you never really touch it during a set. theres also never really a chance you might bump it either. open up your soundcard "audio config" in soundforge. double click both of your buffer sizes, and set them between 200 - 800, depending on your CPU / RAM / soundcard itself.

as for too much bass, its easier to EQ a set later, rather than unflood a mix. turn the bass down a bit.

Check your over all levels on the soundcard..

Like your mix window for the soundcard.

But i don't understand what u mean peaks and valleys. You mean the transients?

- what kind of mixer?? and when you say line out, do you mean just the regular main output (quarter inch line jacks) or the record output (rca)??

i think you said you have an a&h.. if so, and you are using rca to quarter inch line connectors to convert an rca cord and get sound from your main outs to the line-in jack of your computer, then that's the reason you're getting shit sound. not sure exactly why it is but i think it has to do with too much power coming out of the mixer for the souncard to handle. always use the record output as that's what it's there for.. rca to 3.5mm jack into the comp.

Sounds exactly like what I was talking about above. Are you using quarter inch line outputs from the main out or booth out going to a 3.5mm (headphone) jack into the computer's line-in??

To get proper sound for recording, you need to be using rca cords from the 'record out' on the back of the mixer going to the 'line-in' on the back of your computer, which is a 3.5mm headphone jack. When you have it set up like that, the only thing that will control the levels of the sound are the gains so you have to make sure those are all into the yellow with maybe just a bit of reds flickering.

Using the booth output or the main output on a Xone mixer going to a headphone jack into your computer will just result in too much power causing distortion and a very square wave with no "peaks and valleys" as dubfire said.

* Another thing.. if you're plugging into a computer using the "mic input" rather than "line-in input" that will cause significant distortion because the mic inputs usually can't handle the same sound as the line-in inputs.

p.s. everyone needs to get on to using "audacity" as it's a much less bulky program, takes up significantly less system resources, and is absolutely free.

yeah im using the record out to line in on the soundcard and it was too lound for the soundcard to handle, so i switched to booth and it seems ok for now

i'd rather use record out as i dont have to fuck with the levels cuz they stay the same

i think i got it sorted now tho, thanks anyway!

what are you using for outputs? the 1/4's that say Mix Out for main and the record out with rca's?

to set shit up goto Options in soundforge and goto prefrences, then goto audio

also if its clipping check the level for whatever you are using as input to your computer (line in, mic, whatever)... if its mic check that the mic boost is turned off

im just thinking its because the levels of my mixer are alot higher than my creative soundcard was designed for...thats the only thing i can think of after going thru the whole thing

my soundcard is the shittiest thing, came on board with my computer which is a shitty MDG. hard to say what the real problem is though without checking it out visually. it's got to be the stupidest thing that's fucking it up. always is lol.

you should all look into reaper too. way better than audacity, only 3.5 MB, updated daily, and is free as well.

Looks pretty interesting.. definitely gonna check it out. But also looks a bit flashy for me. I like the simplicity of Audacity.

But this prog looks like it may be really cool for editing after the fact. Adding samples, effects, etc. That becomes a bit daunting with Audacity just because of how it's set up.

cosider it a really easy to use cubase.

full vst's, vsti, rewire... everything.

its simple as balls. to record, just click the "R" button next to the volume slider, and it records your mic in. super simple.
