View Full Version : Introdubtion (dnb to dubstep transition feat. Symbiant)

Symbiant came over a while ago and wrote down some ideas.
We got a little twisted (well REALLY FuCkInG whacked out actually) and couldn't really progress the idea. I just found out that i'll probably be thrown in the middle of a DNB night for my first dubstep jam, which is a littel intimidating. That crowd is all dnb heads, expecting a dnb show, but I REALLY want to play some dubstep. I've got some vinyl and a CDJ with some hot new loetech, DZ, and Bowzer tunes, as well as some never before heard dubs from yours truly.
I felt this was worth posting tho, as it's a creative solution. If I just hit the stop button on the TT and started playing dubstep people would go outside and smoke, but i figured if I could make a tune that brought everyone down slowly to tempo then I'd be safe. I'm a mediocre DJ but hopefully this improves the quality of the set and the flow of the night as I explore dubstep live for the first time.

The set will be june 2nd in peterborough. I might be opening but they're putting me higher up on the flyer which makes me think I'll be later in the night.
I'm moving to toronto june ~1st for anyone who cares to know.

Aw fuck they're making me open! and I did all that work too lol
Yeah dubstep in the middle of a dnb jam just seems like a bad idea. Maybe if everyone didn't hate on dubstep so much I might feel a bit more confident. Ah well. I'll get to play to a hyped up floor of 3 or 4 people.
Even my fucking crewmate was like "that's a chill dub but I won't be there if you're spinning that shit". That's the spirit! lol.
I've fixed up the track a bit more. Sounds way bigger. worked out some compression to draw up the air and mixed the bass a bit louder in the mix in proper dubstep fashion. I havn't uploaded the latest copy yet tho.
Thanks for all the feedback.

I think its mostly internet hate. I swear ive showed up for gigs, booked to play dnb and have dropped dubstep sets at prime time and had a packed room moving...Ive never had people complain at dnb events...

at naissance i went on at 1:30 after a 2-hour dnb set that was extremely rowdy and heavy.. wasn't sure how the dubstep would go over in peterborough so i played the heavy bangin tunes and honestly, there were more people dancing within the first 5 minutes of my set than had been up until then all night (in that room). they really went for the dubstep, and the soundsystem was incredible.. played 2 hours and people were really into it, so i know you'll have no trouble hyping up the crowd there.. easier still if you're opening (as far as playing dubstep i mean), but even if you were to follow a dnb set, i wouldn't stress too much. as long as they're not dubstep haters i find people are really receptive to it. especially on a big heavy soundsystem!

Sounsd like we'll both be at the niassance festival coming up!
Brodie and I are doing some techstep/dubstep flex very likely in a 2 or 3 hour set.

LOL
this track makes a great tempo transition, coming across to a heavy dubstep tune from a kinda dull (but fairly standard) dnb track...
only criticism is that saying "and dubstep is the new sound of the underground" might backfire what you hope to accomplish (not pissing ppl off! hehe)
nice work

i think you should drop a some of the robot talking, it's a little too much. more speficially the 'break out your ketamine' and 'dubstep is the new sound of the undergroud' parts, but that's just me.
sick idea and i'm feeling the dubstep part of the tune, the dnb part could use a little work.

Re: capro
Yeah both the intro and outro are meant to be in a mix, so as a piece listened to individually it's def. very minimal and standard. I'd cut the A track right at the breakdown point.
Re capro and ras-one
You're totally right about the phrases.

yeah and who needs hurt up in the dance :lolhit:
yeah decklyn i know what you're sayin, it's a weapon tune
oh, the one part of the vocal that needs work is your name btw... can't make it out
maybe try using a cut up sample, like some rapper saying "deck [s]" and Ice Cube saying "Lyn [ch Mob]"
